Smell & Safety: What to Expect During Your Install

One of the most common questions we get from families along the Front Range is about the "chemical smell" of a new floor. If you’ve ever been near a commercial construction site, you know how overwhelming those fumes can be. At Twin Brothers Coatings, we believe a new floor should improve your home’s environment, not make it unlivable.

Here is the truth about Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), odors, and how we keep your family and pets safe during the process.

Understanding VOCs: Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic

VOCs are the gases emitted as a coating cures. Traditional epoxy systems—especially the cheap DIY kits—are often high-solvent products. This means they release a heavy chemical odor that can linger in your garage and seep into your home for days.

At Twin Brothers Coatings, we use industrial-grade, 85% solids polyaspartic for our topcoats. This formula is engineered to be low-VOC, meaning it meets strict environmental standards and releases significantly fewer fumes than standard garage paints.

What You’ll Actually Smell

We want to be upfront: you will smell something while we are working. There is a faint, chemical scent during the application and for the first few hours of the curing process. However, because our materials cure so quickly, this odor dissipates much faster than a standard epoxy.

Most of our customers find that the scent is virtually gone by the time they are ready to walk on the floor the next day. During the installation, we make sure proper ventilation does exist to help move that fresh-application scent out of the space and away from your living quarters.

Safety for Kids and Pets

We are a family-owned business, so we take the safety of your little ones and four-legged friends seriously.

Installation Phase: We ask that kids and pets stay out of the garage and away from the work area while we are installing. The fumes are strongest during the first few hours of the cure.

Post-Cure Safety: Once the floor is fully cured—usually within 24 hours for foot traffic—it is completely inert. It becomes a seamless, non-porous surface that is actually easier to keep clean and free of the allergens and bacteria that bare concrete tends to trap.

As we always say at the shop, our goal is to give you a floor that is as safe for your kids to play on as it is tough for your truck to park on. We don't use the cheap "stinky" stuff because we wouldn't want it in our own homes either.

Our Safety Protocol

During every install between Denver and the Springs, we prioritize a clean and safe environment. By ensuring that airflow and ventilation are managed correctly, we make sure any minor odors are pushed away from your home’s entrance.

If you have specific sensitivities or respiratory concerns, just let us know ahead of time! We can walk you through the exact safety data for our products so you can have total peace of mind.
