When you look at your garage, you probably focus on the floor. But in most homes across the Front Range—from the newer builds in Castle Rock to the established neighborhoods in Colorado Springs—there is a concrete ledge that runs around the perimeter of the garage. These are your stem walls, the part of your foundation that sits above the floor level.
Leaving these walls bare while coating the floor is like putting on a tuxedo but wearing muddy work boots. At Twin Brothers Coatings, we believe a garage isn't truly finished until those vertical surfaces match the quality of the floor.
The Problem with Bare Stem Walls
Stem walls are made of the same porous concrete as your floor, which means they are susceptible to the same issues:
Water Damage: When you wash your car or snow melts off your tires, water pools against the base of the stem wall. Without a coating, that water soaks in, leading to salt rot and unsightly white efflorescence.
The Aesthetic Gap: Bare concrete stem walls are often stained with construction markings or old paint. Leaving them raw creates a jarring contrast against a beautiful new flake floor.
Cleaning Hurdles: It is much harder to sweep or hose out a garage when dirt gets trapped in the 90-degree angle where a finished floor meets a rough, dusty wall.
The Vertical Challenge
Coating a vertical surface is much harder than coating a floor because gravity is working against you. We use specialized thickening agents in our base coat to ensure the material "hangs" on the wall at the same thickness as the floor. We then hand-broadcast the vinyl flakes to achieve approximately 95% coverage.
While many claim "full coverage," getting flakes to stack perfectly on a vertical surface is practically impossible. That is why our base coat is always tinted to a color that matches the predominant tone of your flakes—this ensures that even at that 95% mark, the finish looks rich, consistent, and professional.
The Twin Brothers Standard: 6 Inches on Us
We believe in doing the job right, which is why at Twin Brothers Coatings, we always include up to 6 inches of stem wall coating at no extra cost. It shouldn't be an "add-on" to have a finished-looking garage; it’s part of our commitment to a high-quality installation.
By coating the stem walls, you create a "bathtub" effect. You can wash your floor with a hose without worrying about water soaking into the foundation or behind the drywall. It turns the garage into a truly waterproof utility space.
A garage floor is a massive improvement, but the stem walls are what make it a room. Coating those verticals protects the most vulnerable part of your foundation from moisture while giving the entire space that clean, professional 'showroom' wrap.
